Horang

Seochon & Bukchon

Homeware Shop

Horang is a cutlery brand made through the hands of spoon-and-chopstick artisans, of whom only four remain in Korea. It has been run since 2020 by Bae Yong-hee, who while operating a lifestyle select shop kept asking, "Why must we import what can also be made here." This year she remodeled a 1965 hanok in Seochon and opened the brand's first offline showroom. Inside a space that keeps the newspaper traces on the pillars and the exposed rafters, carbonized-pine works by artist Park Hong-gu sit beside wallpaper installed by a visiting Kyoto artisan, and Korean and Japanese sensibilities quietly overlap. Horang's spoons and chopsticks, finished seamlessly through thirty steps, carry the grain of artisans set on making something to be used for a long time — for Korean food, Western food, and dessert alike. • Focus Item: Black cutlery — Horang's signature and its best-received line, holding the mood of a space that meets a carbonized-pine counter.
